Quotes: Vedic Astrology (Srila Prabhupada)
Section Description
Jyotish
Jyoti, Kala-Purusha, Bhava, Graha...
Light (*Jyoti*) is a form of information (*Tanmatra*) that alters the states of atoms within an entangled system.
The subtle and gross bodies of a human being are formed through the projection of the "astrological body"—the *Kala-Purusha*—which resides within the Zodiac; this formation is structured according to the astrological houses (*Bhavas*), the constellations and planets situated therein, and the interactions among them.
Sensory perceptions are conveyed to the *Jiva* (the individual soul) through the sanction of the presiding deities of the various *Grahas* (planets): The Sun is the source of light and vital force; the Moon governs the power of the mind, emotions, and reproduction; Mars represents will, aggression, and fire; Venus embodies beauty and desire; Jupiter signifies knowledge and morality; Saturn governs time, boundaries, and karma; and Mercury represents the intellect, speech, and commerce.
The positions of the planets (*Grahas*) at any given moment in time indicate the qualities (*Gunas*) characterizing the *Jiva's* current state within the *Kshetra* (the field of existence).

(The Tree of the Universe) Letter to Swarup Damodar, April 27, 1976. My final decision is that the universe is just like a tree, with root upwards. Just as a tree has branches and leaves so the universe is also composed of planets which are fixed up in the tree like the leaves, flowers, fruits, etc. of the tree. https://vedabase.io/en/library/letters/letter-to-svarupa-damodara-15/
(demigods and laws of nature) Bhagavad-gita 3.11–19. December 27, 1968, Los Angeles. The godless society, they are thinking that everything is being done by nature. Nature is there, but there is a controller of nature... They do not know, the so-called scientists who are thinking that everything is going on automatically... Just like the government affairs are going on automatically. A child can say that everything is going on automatically, but a person who knows the government, the constitution, he knows how departmental managements are going on. That is the difference between the so-called foolish person and one who knows the things. One who knows the things, he knows that everything is controlled by a person. That person is called demigod. So we have to satisfy. Therefore the yajna, sacrifice, is recommend. So that is mentioned here, that "Demigods, being pleased by sacrifices..." Just like to the income tax officer if you pay regularly your income tax, then there is no trouble. Everything will go on. Otherwise, the state will enforce to exact income tax.
So we are receiving heat from the sun. Similarly, we are receiving rains. Don't you think that we have to pay some tax? That is required. That is enjoined in the Vedic literature. You must. Therefore so many sacrifices are recommended. If you do not offer those sacrifices, then there will be irregularity of rain, irregularity of heat, excessive heat, excessive cold, and people will suffer. This is the process. They do not know it... The demigods are empowered administrators of material affairs. How can you deny the existence of demigod?... Similarly, by the supreme order of Krsna, all these demigods are acting just like my different parts of the body are acting... Similarly, all obeisances offered to the demigods, they are meant for giving obeisances to the Supreme Lord. That is the beginning... Similarly, these demigods accepting these different kinds of sacrifices, they are on account of the Supreme Lord. Therefore ultimately you have to satisfy the Supreme Lord... So in this age it is very difficult to satisfy all the demigods differently. People are so much harassed. The best thing is to satisfy directly the Supreme Lord. And what is that simple method? Just chant Hare Krsna. Because we are so fallen in this age, the simple chanting of glorification of the Lord will be equal to performances of all kinds of sacrifices. That is mentioned in the Srimad-Bhagavatam. Yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah [SB 11.5.32].
Those who are... Because each kind of sacrifice, they are very costly affairs. It is not possible in this age. Tons of butter or ghee wanted to arrange for a sacrifice. It is very difficult to find out a pound of butter in a house. And where is the question of tons? Of course, in your country still, butter is available, but in India practically butter is finished. So in one day the whole world will not see any more butter or rice or wheat. Everything will be finished, because with the advancement of the age of Kali everything will deteriorate so badly that all supplies will be stopped practically. At that time people will live just like animals. So this is the only means, Krsna consciousness. In this age, simply, in whatever condition you may be, you can simply sit down and chant... Because after all, however tractor, machine or farm arrangement you may make, unless there is supply of heat and water, it is all useless. You cannot produce grains just like wheat or rice or pulses in your factory or by your will, defying the nature's law. Oh, that you cannot do. Real, your life is in the hands of the demigods. If they stop supply sunshine, if they stop supply water supply, how you can produce? Therefore you have to satisfy them. People are practically forgotten their duty.
(Indra and rain) Bhagavad-gita 2.8. August 8, 1973, London. These men are trying to go to the moon planet, but there is..., that is also another kingdom. Another kingdom. So that kingdom belongs to the higher living entities, those who are known as demigods. They are very powerful. Just like Indra. Indra is very powerful controller of the rains. He has got the thunderbolt. But people do not believe this, but we believe. What is described in the Vedic literatures... Not believe. You have to believe. This is fact. Wherefrom this thunderbolt is coming? Who is arranging for the rain? There must be some director. As in government offices or state, there are so many departmental management, similarly, in God's government there must be so many directors, so many officers. They are called demigods. Devarsi-bhutapta-nrnam pitrnam [SB 11.5.41]. Devatah, the demigods, they are also supplying us by the order of Krsna. Just like Indra. Indra is supplying us. Therefore Indra yajna, there is sacrifice for satisfying the different demigods. Krsna stopped this Indra yajna, you know, Govardhana. When Nanda Maharaja was arranging for Indra yajna, Krsna said, "My dear father, there is no need of Indra yajna." That means anyone who is Krsna conscious, for him, there is no need of any yajna. Especially in this age, Kali-yuga, it is very difficult to perform different kinds of yajna. That was possible in the Treta-yuga. Krte yad dhyayato visnum tretayam yajato makhaih [SB 12.3.52]. Makhaih means yajna, performing yajna. Yajnarthe karmano 'nyatra loko 'yam karma-bandhanah [Bg 3.9].
(Scientific Progress and the Intervention of God and Demigods) "Actually human life is meant for making a solution to the problems of life. One can never solve such problems by satisfying the different demigods, by different modes of worship, or by so-called scientific advancement in knowledge without the help of God or the demigods. Apart from the gross materialists, who care very little either for God or for the demigods, the Vedas recommend worship of different demigods for different benefits, and so the demigods are neither false nor imaginary. The demigods are as factual as we are, but they are much more powerful due to their being engaged in the direct service of the Lord in managing different departments in the universal government. The Bhagavad-gītā affirms this, and the different planets of the demigods are mentioned there, including the one of the supreme demigod, Lord Brahmā. The gross materialists do not believe in the existence of God or the demigods. Nor do they believe that different planets are dominated by different demigods. They are creating a great commotion about reaching the closest celestial body, Candraloka, or the moon, but even after much mechanical research they have only very scanty information of this moon, and in spite of much false advertisement for selling land on the moon, the puffed-up scientists or gross materialists cannot live there, and what to speak of reaching the other planets, which they are unable even to count... We also have information from the Bhagavad-gītā that all the planets within the material world, including Brahmaloka, are but temporarily situated, and after a fixed period they are all annihilated. Therefore the demigods and their followers are all annihilated at the period of devastation, but one who reaches the kingdom of God gets a permanent share in eternal life. That is the verdict of Vedic literature. The worshipers of the demigods have one facility more than the unbelievers due to their being convinced of the Vedic version, by which they can get information of the benefit of worshiping the Supreme Lord in the association of the devotees of the Lord. The gross materialist, however, without any faith in the Vedic version, remains eternally in darkness, driven by a false conviction on the basis of imperfect experimental knowledge, or so-called material science, which can never reach into the realm of transcendental knowledge. Therefore unless the gross materialists or the worshipers of the temporary demigods come in contact with a transcendentalist like the pure devotee of the Lord, their attempts are simply a waste of energy." (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.3.11).
