(limiting of technology, unemployment) Room Conversation with Devotees. August 1, 1975, New Orleans. We are not against machine. You can utilize machine. But we should not allow others unemployed and use machine. This should be point. You can use. Use machine, that's good, but not at the risk of keeping others unemployed. This should be noted. First thing is that everyone should be employed. If you have got many men, then why should you engage machine? These rascals, they do not know. They're creating machine and keeping so many men unemployed. And the welfare department is paying them. They do not know how to organize society. And therefore hippies are coming out. Crime, criminals are coming out. [indistinct] The government is paying for becoming criminals and hippies and prostitutes. And how you can be happy, a society full of prostitutes, hippies and criminals?
(limiting of technology, decreasing labor) Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.5.10–13. November 1, 1976, Vrndavana. There are so many animals. So advancement, and big, big kings, royal families, they have got their transport service by keeping elephants and horses. You can get on the back of the horses and get yourself there. So nature's arrangement, God's arrangement is there. Transport is required in the human society, but you can utilize so many animals for your purpose. But at the present moment, ugra-karma. The transport is there, but they have manufactured big, big buses for transport, big, big cars, and the animals, they are now killed, and eat. That's all. This is civilization. This is civilization. Not to reduce the labor, but increase labor. Therefore they are called ugra-karma, jagatah ahita, and that will create disastrous condition of the human society. This is discussed in Bhagavad-gita.

October 20, 1974, Mayapur. yuktam vairagyam ucyate [Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu 1.2.255] One may say that "If you are condemning material civilization, why you are using?" It does not mean that we are attached to it. But if there is some advantage for spreading Krsna consciousness, we can use it. We can use the modern invention, but we are not attached to that. It is not that without it we become collapsed. No. That is not our policy. We can do with it and without it. When we use it, it is for the advantage of the person. His energy is being... Who has invented this microphone, his energy is being utilized for Krsna's purpose. So dovetail. Everything dovetailed in Krsna's service.
(spiritualizing of constructing tendency) Morning Walk. April 12, 1974, Bombay. So our policy is that if you want to construct, if you have got the tendency, so you construct for Krsna. That will be service. Construct a temple for Krsna. So that service will be taken into account. Similarly, when we use this motorcar or aeroplane, so in the same purpose... Now they have done this, let it be engaged in Krsna conscious service. So one who has manufactured it, he will be benefited, and others will be benefited.
(technology of senses and mind) Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.7.19. September 16, 1976, Vrndavana. We have discussed about brahmastra. It is almost similar to the modern nuclear weapon or bomb, but it is made with chemicals, but this brahmastra is made of mantra. That is the subtle way. Modern science has not reached to that point of subtle existence. Therefore they cannot understand how transmigration of the soul takes place. The modern science has no knowledge. Imperfect knowledge. They see the gross body, but they have no knowledge about the subtle body. But the subtle body is there... So such warfare of mantra, very subtle. This, at the present moment this warfare is carried on gross weapons. But finer than that, there is mantra war. By mantras the warfare can go on. So this warfare is mantra. That is... Just like indriyani parany ahur indriyebhyah param manah [Bg 3.42]. It is said in the Bhagavad-gita that the indriyani, so far our body's concerned, the indriyas, the senses are prominent. But more important than the senses, above the senses, is the mind. Indriyani parany ahur indriyebhyah param manah [Bg 3.42]. So as we have discovered so many weapons... That is gross, to be handled by senses. Even this nuclear weapon, it is handled by the scientists. But it is not by mantra. That science is still to be discovered by the modern scientists, how to... Or just like this mantra. Snake-charming mantra still there are. You are dealing the snake poison with some counter medicine. This is one kind of treatment. But there is another kind of treatment. That is called mantra, by chanting mantra. Or by herbs you can counteract snake bite. Still, there are in India. Therefore Canakya Pandita said that mantrausadhi-vasah sarpah. Sarpa means snake. It can be brought under control by mantra and herbs. Still, in our Mayapur some Muhammadans, they know how to use these herbs and mantras for treating snake bite. In Mayapur there are many snakes, and occasionally snakebite cases are there. But they treat it. And mantra has got power; it has been seen by many medical men in Lucknow. That's a long story. So mantra is powerful. This is mundane. Now you can imagine how spiritual mantra is powerful. Even in mundane world the mantra acts. This is very subtle thing. Then how much...
(ingeniring - demon's duty) Srimad-Bhagavatam 5.5.1 in Hindi Translated into English. January 12, 1976, Bombay. So these electronic methods, pressing buttons, mostly buttons,that is also tapasya. Otherwise how wonderfully it is working. So it is also tapasya. So nowadays people are totally absorbed in this tapasya. But Rsabhadeva says, tapo divyam. Not for this kind of tapasya. That is mechanical skill. This is not tapasya. Previously wonderful things like airplane, big buildings were constructed by the demons. The brahmanas were not making. The brahmanas' duty was to undergo tapasya to attain the shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Brahma janati... Rsabhadeva is reffering to that tapasya. To make an wonderful aeroplane... Making an aeroplane is wonderful, but it is very risky. If by mistake you press a wrong button then everything is finished. It is not perfect. Not perfect. Display of mechanical skill is certainly there, but that mechanical skill is not complete. We require these material mechanical skill but behind this the real skill to purify our existence, suddheta sattva, that is actual skill. Suddheta sattva. That is the goal of human life. To purify the existence. Na hanyate hanyamane sarire. [Bg 2.20]
(plans of modern and vedic scholor atheists become baffled) BTG Delhi, Thursday 5th April 1956. As such the atheist, due to his godless temperament cannot know how the material nature works -- neither he can know the plan of the Supreme Lord. Under such illusion and mode of passion and ignorance -- all his (the atheist's) plans become baffled as in the case of Hiranya Kashipu and Ravana. All their plans were smashed into dust although both of them were materially learned, scientist, philosophers, administrators and educationists etc.

Нирбандхах кршна-самбандхе (Бхакти-расамрита-синдху, 1.2.255). Мы стремимся всё использовать в служении Кришне. Мы не испытываем неприязни к современным изобретениям. Нам лишь следует понять, как использовать эту машину для служения Кришне. Поэтому, если у вас есть излишки молока, вы можете делать из него сухое молоко и отправлять в Индию в любом количестве. Оно будет использовано. По крайней мере, мы можем пользоваться им в разных центрах или же продавать. Так что вопросов нет.

Это должно быть определяющим моментом. Вы можете использовать машину, это хорошо, но не в ущерб занятости других людей. Вот что следует иметь в виду. Самое главное — все должны быть заняты. Если у вас много людей, то для чего задействовать машины? Невежды не понимают этого. Они пользуются машинами и оставляют без работы множество людей.
